About ICT Initial Assessment and Resources

The bksb Initial Assessments and Resources for ICT are unique in allowing learners to assess their skills against the Functional Skills Standards for ICT and then undertake learning resources to improve their essential knowledge in weak areas.

At present, we have individual modular Initial Assessments for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, databases, email, internet, file management, IT basics, and health, safety and security (all based on Office 2010). Task-based learning resources are automatically allocated at the appropriate level, with additional video tutorials also available.

The Initial Assessments and Resources are accessed via bksbLIVE, and are fully-hosted to save all the hassle of installation, set-up and maintenance.

Fully interactive and self-marking

The bksb ICT Initial Assessments are fully interactive and self-marking and cover all levels of the Functional Skills standards.

Suitable for all learners

Our ICT skills assessment are highly intelligent, objective tools, which intuitively determine the level that students are working at across a range of levels.

We're the UK's market leader for functional skills solutions and we operate globally

bksb is the market leading and longest established solution of its type in the UK. It is trusted by thousands of organisations (including the majority of FE colleges) and used by millions of learners across the world every year to support their skills improvement programmes.

Outstanding technical support

As the bksb Interactive Initial Assessment (ICT) is fully-hosted, we save you all the usual hassle of installation, set-up and maintenance. In addition, all bksb customers receive full technical support by phone, email and web at no extra cost.

The bksb ICT Modular Initial Assessments

The modular assessments are based on Office 2010 and are available for word processing, spreadsheets, databases, file management, email, Internet, IT basics, and health, safety and security.

These assessments are short, fully interactive and self-marking, giving results up to Level 2. The modular ICT Initial Assessments are highly intuitive in that they tailor the questions asked specifically to the learner. Higher level learners will be asked more questions, so the length of each assessment varies but usually takes around 15 to 20 minutes.  If needed, it is possible to stop an assessment at any time and continue later from the point where you left off.

Upon completion of an assessment, a report will be generated with the level the learner is currently working at. The appropriate learning resources will then be automatically assigned to the learner.

The bksb ICT Learning Resources

Our Learning Resources will automatically be displayed in the learner’s courses, at the appropriate levels, after the Initial Assessment has been completed. The ICT resources have been written to help learners plug any gaps they may have in the Functional Skills Standards.

The resources are available in a pdf format in three versions; Office 2010, Office 2007 and Office 2003. This enables the learner to choose the compatible resources with the software available to them. These resources have been divided into ten topics:

  • Word processing
  • Spreadsheets
  • Database
  • IT basics
  • Health, safety and security
  • Internet
  • Email
  • PowerPoint
  • Images
  • File management

Each topic has resources for Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2 - with the exception of databases, which only has Level 1 and Level 2. This is due to databases being at a higher level in the Functional Skills Standards.

For each of the ten topics, there is an information pack which covers all of the skills needed to complete all the levels. For each level, of every topic, there are several resources. The resources are task-based and are designed to teach a learner whilst completing a specific assignment. They are designed to plug the gaps in a learner’s knowledge, yet minimise the amount of reading needed to complete a task. As a learner works through a topic, they will use the information pack if they do not know how to do any element of a task. At the bottom of the page in each task, there is a “Help if you need it!” box. This allows the learner to easily find which page to look at in the information pack.

Video Resources

We've recently added a range of Video Resources which are designed to teach a learner whilst they complete a specific assignment – each video is linked to a Learning Resource. The tutorials can be paused at any time, so that the learner can practise skills as they go along. Most of our Video Resources are set at Entry Level 3. Further videos are currently in development.

Interactive Resources

We’ve added a brand new range of Interactive Resources for spreadsheets, covering IF Statements, multiple IF Statements, IF AND, IF OR, IF NOT and COUNTIF statements. Set at Level 2, these resources offer information, examples and demonstration videos to teach the topics, and interactive self-marking activities to check understanding. Further Interactive Resources are currently in development.

Functional Skills Scenarios

Our Functional Skills scenarios allow learners to practise the skills needed to pass their formal examinations. There are four scenarios at each of the following levels - Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2. Again these scenarios are mapped to the Functional Skills standards and can be used to re-assess ability prior to sitting awarding body assessments.
